I couldn’t really figure out what is your “mission” and specially what is your connection to Ascher’s Institute. It would be interseting for me as a former pupil…
My research focuses on documenting the stories of Jewish child survivors of the Shoah who were rescued into Switzerland during World War II. I have been interviewing those child survivors who were ages 7-19 during the war, who were allowed to remain in Switzerland. I’ve interviewed 50 survivors so far and have 10 more names as of now. As I am based in Lausanne, Switzerland, to conduct this research for the academic year, I’ve become very interested in locating the actual places where Jewish refugees were- the “camps d’acceuil”, which mostly don’t exist in their original form, the “kinderheims” and other schools, hotels, maisons, that were established to house refugee children. I interviewed a survivor who was at Institut Ascher during the war as a refugee, which encouraged me to learn more about this place. I was able to visit the building, which is now run by an organization that works with migrants and refugees in Switzerland today, and take many photos there to support my research. I personally find it fascinating that the building is still used to house refugees today, and that it still bears the markings of the mezuzot on the doors from it’s Ascher days. If you have any information about the Institut during the war years, or know anyone who was there, please let me know! I hope this answer helped!
Sincerely,
Samantha (Sam)

Hi Edith,
I’d love to know about your work. I am the child of survivors and came from the US to Aschers in 1963-64 as a teenager. I currently live in NY, am working on a MA degree in Jewish History and am interested in hearing as many survivor stories as possible. Please email me at karinegrun@aol.com. Looking forward.
I was one of the Ascher children in Bex-les-Bains, during 1944-45. I was then 6-7 years of age. Name: Markus Wajsfeld. Also my sister: Annie Wajsfeld. I am today called: Mordecai Paldiel.
I wonder where I can retrieve records of my stay in Ascher’s group. I was told by my mother (who was in another place in Switzerland) that Ascher complained about my bad behavior.
Where can I get some documents on myself in that place?
Thank you.

Hi my name is Lynda and my sister Helen and I were at l’institut Ascher in 1952-53, I remember Ildiko, Rutie and Pater Moskowich from Hungary and Stephen and his sister from the US. Also, Edna Weizman who was the grand daugher of Chaim Weizman was there. I would love to be in touch with anyone who was there at that time. I do know that M. Ascher’s daugher Avaleya lives in Jerusalem.
I spent 2 summers there (1967 and 1968). I was there with a group of Americans – including Phyllis Sherman and Sharon Ullman. My name is Helen Oppenheimer, if anyone remembers me or the other two (who I’m still in touch with), please e-mail me or contact me through FB under Helen Oppenheimer Katz…I’d love to share the many photos I have of all the students- in our rooms and on the many excursions we went on.
I was at IAB in June 1944 with my sister Ilse. It was run by Simon Ascher (known by the children as Onkel Simon) his brother Moses (known as Onkel Mosi) ran the farm that stood to the right of the gate. Onkel Mosi belonged to the local fire brigade and played in the local football team. He made aliyah in the early 50s where he worked as a nurse in a mental institution.

Hi Karine
We were the same year in Institut Asher (64-65) and I am pretty sure you remember me, as I have been your cousin Cecil’s roommate for a year (Patricia/Potage, the one who laughed He He He and the one to whom you wrote when she left: “a Diamond is pure and so is a pearl, but the purest of all is a Jewish girl”). I haven’t forgotten. I was looking for some information about the IAB and landed by chance on this page and saw your name. It’s just incredible!!. I don’t have much Information about IAB to share but would be happy to hear from you, Cecil, Brenda and may be some others…. Contact me

Hi Salomon
First, thanks again to Daniel Bader for setting up this site. My sister Helen and I were at IAB during the early fifties. At that time, I was age 8 and she was 11, we did not realise that many of the other children had been orphaned in the war. I remember Ildiko and Rutie Moskowitz and their little brother, Marcel (from Germany), Pater (from Germany), and Edna Weitzman, grand-daughter of President Weitzman. I was terrified of M. Ascher. There was also a teacher named M. Goldschmidt. If anyone has any memories of that time, please get in touch with me.

Lynda bonjour. Last night I found this forum on Internet. Overwhelming!
After so many years, and with a selective memory we all have…yes, I remember you ( and your sister, older?). I do believe that my years in IAB ( 1954-1959?, I think my parents forgot me there…) were somehow so constructive for me. So much to say about the Aschers:
But mainly, they were ” mensch” and had a modern concept of education, which isn’t so evident in their context.
Please note my email address: erdaar@bluewin.ch

Hello Leonard I am so happy to get your message. Yes, my sister Helen was there with me, she is three years older. How are you? Where do you live? Who else do you remember. All the best Lynda
Lynda Mar 01, 2021 @ 16:01:50
Hello Leonard, thank you for writing to me on the site. My sister Helen and I were at Ascher’s from March 1954 to March 1955; Do get in touch with me, so that we can catch up. I lived in USA for several years, both in NYC and also in Massachusetts, I lived in Israel from 2000 to 2010 and now live in London.
My name is Z Ernie Spiegel. I am also from Los Angeles originally, now living in Las Vegas, NV. I came across this webpage quite by accident, and was taken completely by surprise.
I was at IAB in 1964-65. Karine’s mother and mine were good friends. Cecile’s younger brother and my brother-in-law are best friends to this day. Brenda owned a store down the street from where I lived in Los Angeles, on the same block as Karine’s parents.
I was amazed to read names I hadn’t heard for many years including David Brandmann who was my roommate for a time ; the Friedmann brothers, Jaacov Tenne (funny, he and I never did get along and yet my memories of him are particularly vivid), Julius Alt, who I remember being an amazing skier, Ruth Hes (I had such a childhood crush on her) and many of the other names listed in the post above were familiar to me as well.
The year I spent at IAB was pivotal in my life, and I have many happy memories of my time there. I still dream about the magnificent view of the Dents du Midi from my bedroom window, and of seeing snowfall for the very first time.
It would be most pleasing and I would be most grateful and delighted to hear from anyone, especially if they remember me!
My father, Wolf Z. Guggenheim, was a student at the Old Institute Ascher. His family was heavily involved in rescuing Jews and non-Jews alike during the Shoah. There are still a handful of the 9 siblings surviving, though they are advanced in age. My father passed away in 2002, but I plant to come visit the Institute next month with my family.
Dear Sharona, Please get in touch with Daniel Bader, who runs a group and list of IAB alumni. I would love to meet your family. Where do you live? I don’t often use the blog, so please email me at samantha.lakin1@gmail.com. With best wishes, Samantha
Dear Sharona,
I would very much love to hear about your father’s war-time activities and about life at the Institute. I currently live in the NY area. Please get in touch with me at karinegrunfeld@aol.com. I am looking forward to hearing from you.
If you are planning on visiting the Institute, you should be aware that you should probably contact the current refugee center administration if you wish to walk the grounds. The buildings themselves will likely be off limits; we visited as a family last year and were restricted to the grounds only, as the buildings are currently living spaces for refugees.
Hello Jack,
Would you mind telling from where the refugees come?
Given you last name, are you part of the Ascher family?
If you prefer to email me privately, please do so at karinegrunfeld@aol.com.
I am always interested in people who were students at Ascher and what is currently going on at the Ascher site.

With sincerest regards and best wishes to all,
Z Ernie Spiegel

My father, Wolf Z. Guggenheim, was a student at the Old Institute Ascher. His family was heavily involved in rescuing Jews and non-Jews alike during the Shoah. There are still a handful of the 9 siblings surviving, though they are advanced in age. My father passed away in 2002, but I plant to come visit the Institute next month with my family.

Sharona,
If you are planning on visiting the Institute, you should be aware that you should probably contact the current refugee center administration if you wish to walk the grounds. The buildings themselves will likely be off limits; we visited as a family last year and were restricted to the grounds only, as the buildings are currently living spaces for refugees.
Don’t expect too much…
Karine Ganz Grunfeld
Nov 01, 2015 @ 17:26:15
Hello Jack,
Would you mind telling from where the refugees come?
Given you last name, are you part of the Ascher family?
If you prefer to email me privately, please do so at karinegrunfeld@aol.com.
I am always interested in people who were students at Ascher and what is currently going on at the Ascher site.

I too was a child in Ascher children’s home in Bex-les-Bains, Switzerland, but it was during the war years, in 1943-44.
I have been trying desperately to find any record of my stay there, but no one seems to know where the files of that period are located.
My name then was: Marcus Wajsfeld. I was then 6-7 years old.

If you take the train to Bex, the place is now called EVAM, it’s a home for refugees. You can walk from the train station, just ask where the home is. I don’t know the address.
